New service line expands comprehensive care capabilities for life-threatening injuries

TUCSON (Nov.1, 2019) – Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital has added trauma services, allowing the hospital to offer care for life-threatening injuries through around-the-clock availability of a comprehensive team of medical specialists and support staff.

Becoming trauma capable means St. Joseph’s Hospital will have 24-hour coverage for numerous surgical specialties including complex orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, vascular and cardiovascular surgery, general surgery, facial surgery, hand surgery, ophthalmology and plastic surgery, among others.

“Our hospital has a longstanding commitment to providing access to advanced levels of quality care for the Tucson-area community. Bringing this service into our organization will help reinforce and strengthen our current capabilities to provide care for patients with the most serious life-threatening and disabling injuries,” said Carondelet Health Network Chief Executive Officer Frank Molinaro.

Adding trauma capable services included investment in two new trauma rooms, emergency department renovations and related equipment and instruments. Hospital nurses and staff trained with “trauma drills” to prepare for the services.

“We’ve held multiple drills that have been really helpful in everyone’s understanding of the ‘rules of engagement’ and the importance of individual roles not only in the emergency department, but throughout the hospital – in the operating rooms, diagnostic imaging, ICU and other areas,” said Paige Gesing, trauma services director at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The added capability is a culmination of more than a year of planning, construction, recruitment and collaboration with key stakeholders. Hospital representatives have been conducting pre-hospital outreach to emergency medical services providers and first responders throughout the community.

“St. Joseph’s Hospital now has the resources of a trauma center, and the practice drills really gave everyone an opportunity to understand the importance of the advanced level of service we’ll be providing and what we want to accomplish here,” added Dr. Alicia Mangram, senior director of trauma services. “It has helped with preparation and readiness, understanding the processes and finding opportunities for improvement in how we operate and communicate with EMS providers.”

St. Joseph’s Hospital officials anticipate participating in surveys for official trauma certification next year following required data and outcome collection for the new service line.

“This is certainly a milestone for Carondelet Health Network. Introduction of the trauma service line brings a number of benefits our patients and the communities we serve,” added Molinaro. “The introduction of trauma services at St. Joseph’s Hospital is a great way to elevate our clinical capabilities and expertise while continuing our mission of providing quality, compassionate care in the communities we serve. Addition of this capability will complement our brain and spine, orthopedic, cardiovascular and other specialties, as well as solidify relationships with the region’s first responders.”
