JFK MEMORIAL HOSPITAL RECEIVES NATIONAL QUALITY AWARD FOR ORTHOPEDIC JOINT REPLACEMENT FROM HEALTHGRADES

Award is Based on Quality Study, Which Finds Patients Treated at 5-Star Hospitals are 80% Less Likely to Experience a Major Complication

INDIO, CA (October 21, 2009) – JFK MEMORIAL HOSPITAL has again been ranked in the top 5% in the nation for joint replacement orthopedic surgery by a new study released by HealthGrades, a leading independent healthcare quality ratings organization. The HealthGrades study evaluates objective patient outcomes in the nation’s 5,000 hospitals.

In addition to ranking in the top 5% in the nation for orthopedic joint surgery by HealthGrades, JFK Memorial is also 5 star rated for total hip replacement and hip fracture repair and is a recipient of the 2010 HealthGrades Joint Replacement Excellence Award™.   JFK Memorial has been 5-star rated for total knee replacement for 6 years in a row (2005-2010).  The study results, released last week, serve as third party validation of the quality of orthopedic care provided at JFK Memorial Hospital.

“We are pleased by HealthGrades study results,” states Dan Bowers, CEO at JFK, “although we are not surprised.”  Data released, last quarter, from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, indicates that JFK Memorial Hospital ranks above the national, state and county averages on quality indicators used for measuring clinical core performance in hospitals. “JFK is dedicated to having a quality orthopedics department among the best in the country.” Bowers continued, “HealthGrades designation helps us demonstrate that effort.  The contribution of all our hospital staff and physicians makes this orthopedic recognition possible.  I am extremely proud of the hard work and our performance in providing quality of patient care.”

The HealthGrades study, the largest annual report of its kind, analyzed patient outcomes in nearly 40 million Medicare hospitalization records from 5,000 hospitals over the years 2006, 2007 and 2008. Among the findings related to in hospital complications in this year’s study are:

·         Across all procedures in which complications were studied, there was a 79.69% lower chance of experiencing one or more in hospital complications in a 5-star rated hospital compared to a 1-star rated hospital.

·         Across all procedures studied, there was a 61.22% lower chance of experiencing one or more in hospital complications in a 5-star rated hospital compared to the U.S. hospital average.

·         If all hospitals performed at the level of a 5-star rated hospital, 110,687 orthopedic in hospital complications may have been avoided among Medicare patients over the three years studied.

The new 2010 HealthGrades hospital ratings were posted at www.healthgrades.com, HealthGrades’ public Web site.  Find out more about JFK's Orthopedic program.
