At JFK Memorial Hospital, we deliver approximately 3,000 babies a year, so we pride ourselves with an experienced and caring staff. Our emphasis is on the health of your baby (and you) throughout your pregnancy, during your delivery and after you're at home.

While having a baby is one of the greatest events of your life, a woman's health is important at every age. This is why we provide the support of specialized physicians and a variety of programs through our gynecological services.

• Maternal Child Education begins when the patient arrives and continues until the patient is discharge.  Education is family focused and is intended to prepare parents, not just to care for their baby when they go home, but to care for themselves, as well. 

• We are also proud to offer parents additional learning opportunities with the use of the Newborn Channel which is available 24 hours a day in the hospital in both English and Spanish.

MOTHER BABY COUPLET UNIT

Our Mother-Baby couplet care in the postpartum area means that nurses care for you and your baby together and mother and baby are rarely separated to help you learn your baby's special feeding cues.  There are Lactation Specialists available to help with problems, and nursing staff that are specially trained to help with Breastfeeding.  We have professional photographers from "Our 365" that come to your room in the hospital and photograph your newborn alone or with other family members in that special photo that you will be glad to show off.  Access to a website with a unique password that you select for friends and family to be able to view your new addition beginning in August 2010.

We support the Baby Friend 10 steps to successful breast feeding! 

1. Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff.
2. Train all health care staff in skills necessary to implement this policy.
3. Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding.
4. Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within an hour of birth.
5. Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintian lactation, even if they should be separted from their infants.
6. Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breast milk, unless medically indicated.
7. Practice "rooming in" by allowing mothers and infants to remain together 24 hours a day.
8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand.
9. Give no artificial nipples, pacifiers, dummies, or soothers to breastfeeding infants.
10. Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or birthing center.

Visiting Hours for Mother / Baby are:

Regular hospital visiting hours apply with the exception of Fathers or Significant others with a pink or blue arm band may visit any time.  Siblings are allowed in the Mother / Baby unit from 11:00a.m. to 8:00p.m. - there is no age limit on siblings, however, they must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

PEDIATRICS

We realize that a hospital stay for your child can be stressful and frightening experience.  Our goal at JFK Memorial Hsopital is to make your child's stay as comfortable as possible.  Our philosophy encourages family togetherness, with the belief that the family is a child's primary source of strength and support.  We encourage you to participate in your child's care and welcome your questions and suggestions.  Our team of pediatric specialist, are focused on providing our young patients withoutstanding, individualized care.  Our staf fof pediataric nurses have specialized skills, knowledge and experience in the care of sick children and will care for your child 24 hours a day.

In our pediatric unit, we have age appropriate toys, books, and games to help keep your child entertained.

Visiting Hours for Pediatrics are:

Regular hospital visiting hours apply except in the case of parents.  Parents or grandparents may visit any time, however, only one family member may stay during the night.  No visitors under the age of 14 years.
