Every day we perform simple tasks and participate in activities that bring us joy. It is easy to overlook the role that good health and ease of mobility play in allowing us to enjoy these simple activities. The difficulties associated with arthritis pain, degenerative joint disease and orthopedic injuries don’t just cripple our bodies – they can cripple our ability to enjoy the simple pleasures in life.

MAKOplastyTM Tactile Guidance System used to treat osteoarthritis knee disease. Nearly 21 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis. Osteoarthritis of the knee (OA Knee) is a leading cause of physical disability and as the population ages; the number of people with OA Knee is expected to grow. It is a degenerative bone disease that causes the cartilage found on healthy joints to break down removing the buffer between bones. This often causes pain during normal daily activities and can eventually cause loss of motion and mal-alignment of the knees. Other than lifestyle changes and medication, the only other treatment option is knee replacement surgery. Many patients, however, would rather live with the pain than have what they consider to be a major surgery.
The MAKOplasty surgical solution is an FDA-cleared treatment option for patients who suffer from osteoarthritis damage in the medial (inner) portion of the knee. The procedure includes partial knee resurfacing which addresses patients who suffer from early to mid-stage OA Knee. MAKOplasty is designed to provide reduced recovery time and improved surgical outcomes for patients with joint degeneration in only one part of the knee.

ConforMIS JFK Memorial Hospital announced an exclusive agreement to offer patient-specific, partial knee resurfacing implants, designed and manufactured by ConforMIS, Inc. The novel implant systems are intended for patients suffering from moderate to late stage osteoarthritis of the knee, a condition that affects more than 27 million adults in the U.S. only patient-specific bicompartmental knee resurfacing implant on the market.
The iDuo is designed as a bone-sparing alternative to a traditional total knee replacement for early intervention patients whose arthritic damage is limited to either the inner or outer compartment of the knee, and the area behind the knee cap. The implant resurfaces only the affected areas, preserving far more bone on both the femur and tibia than traditional total knee replacement surgery. The iDuo also preserves all of the patient’s healthy ligaments, helping to maintain natural knee kinematics and preserve options for future surgical procedures.
“Patients are requesting minimally invasive options that allow them to get back to their daily routines as soon as possible, especially if they’re not a candidate for full knee replacements,” said Dr. Sinha. “With the advanced technology of the ConforMIS system, I’m able to offer my patients a personalized implant that offers a minimally invasive surgical procedure, rapid postoperative recovery and shortened rehabilitation time.” Read the testimonial of a Rancho Mirage resident who recently experienced a ConforMIS total knee replacement at JFK.
